Mass defections are said to have hit the Anglican Church following leadership wrangles which have left worshippers confused.
Hardest hit by the defections is the Bishop Nolbert Kunonga faction which has wrested control of the church’s properties around the country leaving the other parishioners led by Bishop Chad Gandiya without places of worship.
When NewsDay visited the Anglican Cathedral in the city on Sunday, there was an unusually small congregation in the church that is normally full.
Groups of parishioners sat huddled outside the church, discussing in hushed tones the leadership fight rocking the church.
“We no longer come to the Anglican Church,” said a member of a group that was taking academic lessons at the church premises. “We are just here for our ‘O’ Level supplementary lessons. Yes, it is true that most worshippers have started leaving this church, defecting to some Pentecostal churches strewn around the city.”
