A 40-year-old man from Kariangwe in Binga who assaulted and injured his mother using a log after accusing her of bewitching him has been sentenced to an effective 10-month jail term.

Ziya Mudimba pleaded guilty to charges of domestic violence when he appeared before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu on Tuesday.

The magistrate sentenced him to 12 months in jail. Two months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

On September 20, Mudimba, who has his own homestead in Kariangwe, visited his parents’ home in the same area and found his 62-year-old mother, Kaje Mudimba, preparing a meal inside her kitchen hut.

Mudimba accused her of bewitching him and then struck her with a log all over, inflicting serious injuries on her.

She reported the matter to the police, leading to Mudimba’s arrest.

David Never Shiku prosecuted.
