Midlands-Matabeleland (Mid-Mat) Rugby League champions Gweru Sports Club (GSC) have put one foot into the National Rugby League (NRL) after posting a 21-13 win over Old Hararians 2 in a penultimate promotional play-off match played at Kwekwe Sports Club on Saturday.

The two sides will this weekend meet in Harare for the play-offs second leg, with the Gweru side hoping to finally end the seven-year sabbatical from local rugby’s elite league.

After being snubbed by the NRL to play in the top-flight league this season following an all-conquering performance in the 2010 term, where they topped the Mid-Mat league, GSC launched another bid with yet another indomitable run in this year’s just-ended season.

Club coach Zwelonke Mloiswa said they would finish off Old Hararians 2 on Saturday and gain promotion.

“I am very much confident we will win this weekend and reclaim our place in the national league. We did ourselves a very big favour by winning the first leg last weekend,” said Mloiswa.
