According to police, Nyakarare and his relative, identified as Tafadzwa Rukato (17), were gathering firewood when they were approached by Simbarashe Chauruka (age not given) who accused them of stealing his firewood.

Chauruka allegedly claimed ownership of the tree from which Nyakarare and his relative were collecting firewood.

The misunderstanding degenerated into a fierce fight involving the trio. “An altercation ensued with all three involved,” Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara, confirmed.

“Chauruka who was armed with an axe struck the now deceased several times on the knees and once on the back of the head.

“Nyakarare fell unconscious and upon realising the gravity of his action the accused fled the scene.” After the incident, Rukato allegedly rushed home and reported the incident to relatives who attended the scene.

An unconscious Nyakarare was rushed to Kadoma District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police have since launched a manhunt for Chauruka.
