Zimbabwean female long -distance runners dominated the women’s race at the Cape Town Marathon with Chiyedza Chokore leading a trio in the top ten on Sunday.

According to reports from South Africa, Chokore, winner of the Om Die Dam, who runs for Mr Price Athletics Club, had a 120-m advantage at the line which she crossed in two hours 46 minutes 31 seconds.

The Cape Town Marathon was an official qualifier for the London Olympics in 2012, but Chokore’s time was just outside the A and B standard qualifying times of 2 hours 37 minutes zero seconds and two hours 43 minutes zero seconds respectively.

Another Zimbabwean Margaret Mahohoma, also from Mr Price, came second in two hours 47 minutes and one second ahead of South African Bulelwa Mtshagi who completed the race in 2:48,44.

Chokore and Mahohoma pocketed R25 000 and R15 000 respectively.

South African Miya Lawrie, from the Boxer club in Kwazulu Natal, was fourth and first in the over 40 category in 2:50,09.

Muchaneta Gwata completed the list of Zimbabweans in the race in fifth position in a time of 2:51,31 to cap off a fine performance by local athletes.

Veteran female long and middle-distance runner Samukeliso Moyo finished a disappointing seventh in the women’s 10km race.

It was always going to be tall order for Moyo, who last Sunday came second at Bonita City-to-City 50km Marathon.

In the men’s race Gilbert Mutandiro who runs for Mr Price Athletics Club, was the only Zimbabwean in the top ten after coming home in fourth position in a time of 2:17,17.

Mutandiro’s time is in the B-standard category (2:18,00) for qualification for next year’s London Olympic Games.

The A standard qualifying time for the men’s marathon event, 2:15,00, was matched by Kenyan Amos Maiyo who won the race in an Olympic qualifying time of two hours 14 minutes 55 seconds.
