LUPANE — Over $3 000 school development funds at Mabhikwa High School has reportedly gone missing from the school coffers amid accusations of fraud.

Impeccable sources on Thursday told NewsDay the disappearance of the money was uncovered in May this year after parents demanded to know how development funds were being used.

School Development Committee chairman, Vumani Ndlovu said: “The school committee has since engaged the Ministry of Education, Art, Sports and Culture. About $3 000 went missing in May this year and it is not clear what really transpired. Parents want re-imbursement of SDC funds as a matter of urgency.

“The ministry told us that the matter (will be) investigated according to the ministry’s regulations (but) they are still dealing with the issue.”

He said the reason why parents were eager to have the matter resolved was that sometime in May 2010 another $5 000 went missing. The money had not yet been recovered. Lupane district education offices referred enquiries to Matabeleland North deputy director of Education Methias Luphahla, who said they had not yet received the report from the district offices.

“We have not yet received such a report from the district offices. Maybe, they are yet to send it. We only have a report of last year’s $5 000 disappearance where a bursar also disappeared after the money reportedly went missing,” said Luphahla.
