The newly formed Southern Region Basketball League encompassing Bulawayo Basketball Association and the Midlands Basketball Association leagues teams kicks off at Bulawayo Club for the Disabled on Saturday.

BBA secretary-general Joe Mujuru yesterday confirmed that the combined league begins on Saturday.

“We are starting the Southern Region League which has seen the amalgamation of BBA and the Midlands league teams. We would have wanted to run our own separate leagues, but because of limited resources we will now only have one league,” he said.

In the men’s section ZB Titans take on Midlands State University while pre-season tournament runners-up Kings face Stars.

Steelers from Kwekwe will make the long journey to Bulawayo for a clash against Abundant Life Christian Centre.

Gweru side Unicorns, who boast players like Walter Mabhena and Timothy Tswatiswa, meet Oilers who have Shadel Noble and veteran Ernie Noble in the team.

Sentinels start off their campaign in the league when they face Highlanders, who make their return to competitive basketball in the last match in the men’s section.

Highlanders have in their ranks former Giants and Lords players who include Michael Zvoushe, Stewart Woods, Khalid Fazilhmed, Lionel Smith and Derrick Chiradza.

In the women’s section Midlands State University take on Giants while Steelers play Highlanders who have experienced players like Sincengile Mzemba, Jackie Phenduka and Seldom Woods.

Mujuru said they were hoping that the league will assist in unearthing more talent.
