Harare City Council engineers are being accused of illegally connecting water to housing co-operatives in a move that has seen the local authority losing thousands of dollars.

Councillors fumed during a full council meeting last week accusing city managers of doing nothing to stop this fraud.

They charged the engineers were receiving money from their illegal activities at the expense of the cash-strapped council.

“There is a chief engineer who is benefiting and connecting water to co-operatives and now they are getting water for free,” said Councillor Thomas Muzuva.

The city fathers also complained about municipal police whom they accused of failing to evict illegal property occupiers or to rein in corrupt officials.

Particular complaints were raised over alleged massive corruption in the city housing department which Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda has since been urged by the Harare Residents’ Trust to pay personal attention to.

Councillor Panganayi Charumbira claimed council was not receiving any revenue from Mbare Musika bus terminus because of corruption involving council workers, bus operators and vendors.

“A lot is happening at Mbare Musika and we are not benefiting anything. Municipal police should act on that to make sure all culprits are brought to book,” he said.
