A 35-year-old Chirumhanzu man was this week slapped with a 12-year jail term for raping his 9-year-old stepdaughter after threatening her.
The man, from Chief Hama’s area in Chirumhanzu, was sentenced on his own plea of guilty to three counts of rape when he appeared before Gweru regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza.
The court heard that sometime in 2009, the juvenile was left under the custody of her stepfather while other family members went away for the day.
He invited the minor to her grandmother’s hut where he told her that he wanted to teach her physical education, but she ran away.
The man gave chase, caught her and started turning her in circles till she became dizzy and he raped her once.
Later that same year, the man took advantage of other family members’ absence from home and again raped the minor before threatening unspecified action if she spilled the beans to anyone.
On August 5 this year, the minor’s mother went to St Theresa Hospital and left her daughter in her stepfather’s care.
The man raped her again and this time the minor reported her ordeal to her grandmother the following morning.
