Former South African President Thabo Mbeki, credited with bringing Zanu PF and the MDC formations into a power-sharing government ending a decade-long Zimbabwean political and economic crisis, returns to Harare next week for a public lecture on Pan-African leadership.

The lecture, organised by Sapes Trust as part of its monthly lecture series, will be held next Tuesday.

Mbeki is widely credited with bringing antagonists President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to the negotiating table, culminating in the formation of the inclusive government in February 2009.

According to the organisers, Mbeki’s lecture will focus on the Africa Union, Sadc and the Zimbabwe transition.

“His Excellency, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, will make a public address on the topic The AU, Sadc and the Zimbabwe Transition,” read a statement by Sapes Trust yesterday.

Besides mediating in the Zimbabwe crisis, Mbeki’s negotiating skills, often dismissed by critics as “ineffective quiet diplomacy”, have cooled tempers in many African hotspots.

Analysts predict high attendance, raising fears the venue might be too small to accommodate the numbers which would include academics, students, civic society groups and members of the public.
