Chaos rocked the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) yesterday after 12 of its affiliates vowed to disregard and contest results of the just-ended labour body’s elective congress held in Bulawayo at the weekend.

The congress at the weekend ushered in new bosses at the labour body.

The 12, led by Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general Raymond Majongwe yesterday claimed the congress had contravened the ZCTU constitution and declared its outcome as a nullity and void ab initio.

“We still recognise the ZCTU president as Lovemore Matombo and Japhet Moyo as the current acting secretary-general and that no structures whatsoever have been changed,” said Majongwe.

“We urge the workers at ZCTU not to interfere with our politics and further encourage them to do their work in compliance with their contracts of employment.”

Majongwe said a proper congress will be held later this year by bona fide members acknowledging and in proper compliance with the ZCTU constitution.

The four other unions who have since joined Majongwe are the Medical Professionals and Allied Workers’ Union, Transport and General Workers’ Union and the College Lecturers’ Workers Union. Earlier, before the Press conference, NewsDay overheard Majongwe’s group planning to freeze the ZCTU account and assets in a bid to destabilise the new executive committee.

But Moyo, who has already assumed his new role as ZCTU secretary-general, yesterday rubbished Majongwe’s group saying the ZCTU no longer took them seriously.

“In terms of ZCTU assets and property, we are in total control of those while they operate from hotels. If they try to break the law, it will take its course,” he said.

Moyo said the four unions which claimed to have joined Majongwe were not even members of the ZCTU and some of them had just made their applications.

Former ZCTU secretary-general Wellington Chibebe also dismissed Majongwe’s group as illegitimate.
