Most passengers, stranded due to the ongoing strike by Air Zimbabwe pilots are being forced to make their own travel arrangements as the national airline is failing to come up with options for them.
The pilots embarked on strike action in July, leaving hundreds of their passengers stranded. Passengers seething with anger could be seen at the Air Zimbabwe offices yesterday, demanding alternatives.
“This is my fourth day coming here to their offices (Air Zimbabwe) and following up on my flight, but it seems they cannot do anything. They can’t give me a refund because they say they have no money.
I am supposed to be back in London as I have to go back to work,” said Christine Mpofu who has been stranded since last week. Other passengers said they were making independent arrangements to travel.
“We have had to buy tickets for ourselves from our own coffers. We tried to get refund, but they could not. We hoped they would re-route us like they promised, but nothing has been done for us,” said one passenger who only identified herself as Gina.
The Air Zimbabwe strike has now entered its fourth week and no solution appears to be in sight.
Acting chief executive officer Innocent Mavhunga yesterday confirmed there was still no solution and they were hinging their hopes on the Transport ministry.
Mavhunga said: “I am sorry we do not have a breakthrough as yet as I had hoped. It’s unfortunate that we do not have any money as yet as the ministry is still trying to source some money for us.”
