MDC-T youth assembly deputy president Costa Machingauta was yesterday arrested and was being held at Glen View Police Station, as police intensify their clampdown on party activists in Harare.

His lawyer, Gift Mtisi, confirmed the arrest last night.

“I can confirm he was arrested for assaulting a person in a bar last night (Sunday). I am with him right now at the police station,” he said.

The arrest comes at a time MDC-T youth assembly president Solomon Madzore is also wanted by the police in connection with the alleged murder of Police Inspector Petros Mutedza in Glen View in May.

Madzore recently failed to attend the burial of his mother in Buhera amid reports the police were looking for him in connection with the incident. Yesterday, the MDC-T youth assembly claimed while Machingauta was held at Glen View Police Station, some unidentified youths stormed the station baying for his blood.

Youth assembly spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo said: “While at the police station, (an unidentified group has) forced itself in.

“As MDC youth assembly, we condemn such an act. It is unthinkable, it is animalistic behaviour. We call upon the police to immediately arrest the youths.”

More than 24 MDC-T youths were arrested in connection with the killing of Mutedza in May.
