A 59-year-old Chinamhora man, Wilfred Sibanda, was last week arrested and charged with allegedly raping a 61-year-old mentally challenged woman who also happens to be his distant relative.

Sibanda, who resides at Zimbira Village in Chief Chinamhora’s area, is alleged to have raped and threatened the complainant with assault if she divulged the matter to anyone.

However, the granny allegedly defied the threats, reported the abuse to her younger sister who eventually spilled the beans.

It is alleged on August 6, Sibanda visited the complainant’s homestead and found her alone.

That same day another visitor, who was not identified in court papers, also came to the same homestead and the complainant got into her bedroom to collect food to prepare for the visitors.

While she was in the bedroom, Sibanda is alleged to have followed her and closed the door behind him.

He allegedly threatened the complainant with assault and raped her once. The matter came to light a week later after the complainant’s sister paid her a visit.

The complainant reported the alleged abuse to her and she eventually reported the matter to the police.

Sibanda was not asked to plead when he appeared before regional magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi facing a rape charge last week.

He was remanded in custody to Friday this week for trial. Rufaro Mhandu prosecuted.
