Young Zimbabwean tennis players continue making the nation proud beyond the country’s borders and this weekend it was the turn of Rumbidzai Ugaro, who won a junior title in Tanzania.

Never mind the fact that the title Ugaro won was not on the ITF Junior Circuit calendar, but Ugaro still came out with flying colours.

The promising young Zimbabwean won the 14 and Under title at the CRB Africa Legal Junior Open Tennis Championship title in Dar-es-Salaam on Sunday.

Ugaro caused a stir when she shocked Tanzania’s Sarah Bura 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets in her own backyard in the 14 and Under girl’s finals at the Gymkhana Club in the Tanzanian capital.

According to reports from the East African nation, the Zimbabwean proved a power to reckon with en route to the finals after posting impressive results.

In the semi-finals she humiliated Coast region-based Theresa Sebastian by two quick straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2 to book a date with Bura.

Ugaro is currently ranked 47th on the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) continental rankings in the 14 and Under age group.

South African-based young star Nicole Dzenga, who didn’t compete in Tanzania, is the country’s highest ranked Zimbabwean in the age group on second place while her compatriot Tanaka Chakanyuka is in ninth position.

The two day event in Tanzania attracted over 70 young tennis players aged below 18 to a competitive networking tennis event organised by a Tanzanian law firm CRB African Legal in conjunction with the Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA).

The tournament preceded a week-long tennis camp dubbed the Junior Simba Tennis Camp that ended last Friday at the same venue.

The camp was conducted by a top Italian tennis expert Fabrizio Caldarone.

Players from Morocco, Zimbabwe and hosts Tanzania took part.
