Could former Warriors captain Benjani be heading back to South Africa’s Jomo Cosmos?

Speculation is rife in South African football circles after Cosmos owner Jomo Sono told Kick Off yesterday that he had a big surprise for Kaizer Chiefs in their opening Absa Premiership clash this weekend.

That has got the rumour mill into overdrive with reports that Benjani, Malawian Esau Kanyenda or Zambian Christopher Katongo could be heading back.

Benjani is a free agent, but is in talks with English Premiership outfit Blackburn Rovers over a new deal after rejecting the initial offer.

“We have offered Benjani improved terms but I don’t know if that will be enough,” said Blackburn manager Steve Kean.

“I will have another conversation with him because we are getting to the time for a decision, for him and us. “Hopefully he can agree, but we totally respect it if someone else is offering him better terms and we would wish him all the best. Hopefully that isn’t the case though.”

And because of this, the rumour mill suggests, he is the best candidate to feature for Cosmos this weekend. “There is this player I sent overseas I want back to help my team in the striking department. I hope to finalise everything with his team and hope to have him available for our game against Chiefs at the weekend,” was all Sono would tell KickOff.com.

Benjani was voted the South African PSL’s Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Season in 2001 after making a move from the University of Zimbabwe team.

From Cosmos, he moved to Grasshoppers in the Swiss top flight en route to AJ Auxerre in the French Ligue One. He then joined Portsmouth, moved to Manchester City where he was loaned to Sunderland before settling at Rovers. He scored three times in 21 appearances for Rovers. Benjani was not picking up his mobile yesterday when sought for comment.
