A women’s football tournament that will feature eight teams from Zimbabwe and two from Botswana kicks off in Bulawayo Saturday.

The knockout tournament to be played in a round-robin format has been sponsored to the tune of $8 000 by LM Auctioneers and will end on Sunday.

Bulawayo will be represented by New Orleans, Inline Academy, Maton Queens and Cowdray Queens.

Mufakose, Cosa Guruve, Flame Lily and Black Rhinos complete the Zimbabwean representatives. Double Action and Township Rollers are representing Botswana.

Speaking during the launch on Wednesday night, local organising committee and regional chairperson of women’s football Elizabeth Langa expressed her appreciation for the sponsorship.

“We would like to thank the sponsors for bringing us this tournament. This will definitely raise competition and strengthen women’s football. It will also help in rebranding women’s football,” she said.

LM Auctioneers director Lewis Muzhara said the tournament aims to promote the girl child.

“We are making the tournament bigger. We have invited two Botswana teams. It is not only about empowering and uplifting the girl child through football, but it is also helping the girls in discipline,” he said.

The winners of the tournament will walk away with $500, a trophy, 25 gold medals and 25 T-shirts.

The first runner-up and the second runner-up will get $300, 25 bronze medals and 25 T-shirts.

The third-placed team will get $200, a trophy, 25 bronze medals and 25 T-shirts.

The player of the tournament will get $100, while the goalkeeper of the tournament and the top goalscorer will each receive $50.
