Mutare City Council (MCC) is set to crack the whip on private land developers who are sitting on vast tracts of land to the detriment of thousands of home-seeking residents.

Land enough to develop 6 000 stands given to private developers such as KMP, Aloe Enterprise and various cooperatives in Mutare, is lying idle.

In a full council meeting resolution, MCC has given the developers an ultimatum of 18 months to complete their projects, failure which council will repossess its land.

Town Clerk Obert Muzawazi said the situation cannot go unchecked due to the rising waiting list of home-seeking residents.

“The greatest prejudice of the setback is on the home-seeking residents. The waiting list is growing yet the developers are not doing anything or even keeping abreast of the situation they are going through,” he said.

He added it was mandatory for them to complete their projects so Mutare moves forward.

The city’s deputy mayor George Jerison told NewsDay the problem was caused by poor supervision.

He said the situation was inherited from the previous commission appointed by Local Government Urban and Rural Development minister Ignatius Chombo following the dismissal of the MDC-T council in 2005.

“The new council has come up with a new supervisory strategy to closely monitor the development of the land developers for the benefit of the residents,” he added.
