A one-year-old toddler died on Tuesday after drowning in a 20 litre bucket full of water when a maid left him alone at home while she went to fetch water.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Thabani Mkhwananzi said the incident happened at around 2pm on July 26 at Tud Village, Sun Yet Sen in Kezi.

“A 14-year-old maid was left with the one-year-old boy by his parents on the fateful day. The maid decided to leave the toddler alone at home while she went to fetch for water from a borehole,” said Mkhwananzi.

He said the teenager had left a 20 litre bucket full of water close to where the toddler was. The child allegedly got into the bucket head first and drowned.

When the maid returned, she found the child dead. A report was made to the police, who suspected no foul play.

Mkhwananzi challenged parents to take care of their children and never leave toddlers in the custody of minors.
