The death of retired General Solomon Mujuru has shocked all and sundry who described it as a great loss not only to his wife, Vice-President Joice Mujuru, but the nation at large.

Following reports of his death this morning, NewsDay took to the streets of greater Harare to gather people’s views and this is what they had to say.

Aaron Geza, a former soldier who worked closely with the late Mujuru said he was deeply saddened by the news.

“I am really touched by the death of General Mujuru. It is a great loss for us and his death is a painful one. I remember him as my boss when he was an army commander. I worked with him and he used to give commands very well. I am very pained and very sad.”

Emma Magaya said: “I saw him on Defence Forces’ Day, How could he have died? This is a shocker for us and especially Mai Mujuru. He was the Vice-President’s pillar of support politically.So, this is a blow to his family, security forces and the nation at large.”

Ceaser Chimutwe said: “The way he died is a painful one. One who fought for our Independence and then we just hear that he was burnt to death, it is really shocking.”

Retired Captain J J Ntini said: “This is shocking news. I am hearing this from you and this is sad news.

I worked with him and he was an excellent commander. He taught me a lot in his time when we worked together. This is a great loss to the nation.

This is also a heavy blow on his wife as they had great plans lined up and his death will disturb her a lot. I am greatly shocked.”

Farai Mambanje said: “I am sorry about the loss of General Mujuru because he was a strong fighter and an inspiration to a lot of people. He was one of the many who fought for our independence.”
