A veteran of Zimbabwe’s liberation war, who has apparently turned himself into a squatter at Ascot Racecourse in Bulawayo, reportedly ran amok on Monday and destroyed a glass door panel at a Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) branch after failing to access his monthly gratuity.
Agrippa Ncube (59) was convicted on his plea of guilty to malicious injury to property when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate, Rose Dube yesterday.
But Dube postponed passing sentence for two years while he ordered the bank to deduct $30 per month from gratuity until the value of the damaged door was fully recovered.
Ncube told the court he could not control his anger after being informed his gratuity money had not gone through.
Ncube claimed he broke the bank’s glass door panel because he had become “dizzy” after hearing the news about his money and begged the court to remand him in prison so he could be examined by doctors for the stomach ailment he was suffering, for free.
However, the magistrate freed him with a stern warning not to repeat the offence.
Prosecutor Malvern Nzombe told the court on July 25, Ncube went to POSB in the city centre to enquire about his money.
He was advised by a teller there was no money in his account. Ncube immediately went berserk shouting at the bank staff saying since he was an ex- soldier, there should be money in his account.
