LUSAKA — The 2011 Castle 7s rugby championship scheduled for August 27-28 in Lusaka will take a new format — combining two tournaments including the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) qualifiers for national teams.

Zambia Rugby Football Union (ZRFU) general-secretary Callitus Kaoma said apart from the usual participants from within Southern Africa, this year’s Castle 7s will have eight teams doing battle in a CAR qualifier.

Kaoma said the eight teams invited by CAR were Botswana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, Swaziland, Uganda, Zimbabwe and hosts Zambia.

“However, the tournament will still take the usual format with a total of 16 teams participating. These will be made up of the eight teams invited by CAR from African national teams and the other eight to be invited by the ZRFU from the Southern African region and beyond,” he said.

Kaoma said the invited teams — who were expected to start arriving for the championship by August 26 — had been requested to confirm their participation in the event with CAR by next Monday. —Times of Zambia
