Afro Vision, a Senga-based group from the Midlands State University (MSU) in Gweru, scooped the first prize at the Chibuku Road to Fame Midlands finals held in Kwekwe over the weekend.

The group, winners of the Midlands finals last year, showed they had matured after giving a five star performance. They walked away $1 000 richer and will represent the Midlands Province at the national finals scheduled for September 17 in Harare.

Afro Vision beat eight other groups — Dapurahunanzva Express, Mavanga Express, Afro Storm, Cool Breeze, The Bliss, Gonera Mugomo, Les Gonex Musica, and Africa Power Kings — on their way to victory.

Mavanga Express took second position and walked away with $500 while Afro Storm settled for third and pocketed $300.

Afro Storm seemed to have been inspired by last year’s winners, Club Shanga, if the similarities in performances are anything to go by.

Competition was undoubtedly stiff as most groups seemed experienced and gave the judges a hard time. There were more Afro fusion groups from the Midlands compared to other provinces, which preferred Sungura.

So far, the Chibuku Road to Fame provincial finals have been held successfully in Mutare, Harare, Masvingo, Hwange, and Mvurwi. This year’s winner of the national finals will walk away with $5 000 and a recording contract from Gramma records.

This weekend, the Chibuku Road to Fame talent search competitions will be held in Bulawayo at the Manor Hotel.

Meanwhile, Chibuku Road to Fame 2010 champions Club Shanga won the hearts of many who attended their album launch on Friday. They kept fans on their feet dancing to each and every track on the album.

The album titled, The Fullness of Time was successfully launched in Harare at an event which was well attended by members of the public. The album has tracks, Guyu, Mukaushande, Ndinaye, Musango, Mwoyo Wangu, Makwikwi, Simuka and Kusaziva.
