MDC-T national chairman and Speaker of Parliament Lovemore Moyo has urged Finance minister Tendai Biti to allocate a substantial part of his Mid-Term Budget towards re-industrialisation of Matabeleland, particularly Bulawayo.

In an exclusive interview with NewsDay in the city this week, Moyo said he was disturbed by the wave of de-industrialisation in the region and called on the government to make efforts to revive the country’s former industrial hub.

“In my understanding of the issue of industrialisation, only $50 million is needed to resuscitate the industries in Bulawayo. The amount is not impossible for the government to get if it is really determined to help Matabeleland region revive its industry,” said Moyo.

“As political leadership of Matabeleland we are really concerned with the (supposed) industrialisation of Bulawayo.

“But it is sad to see the opposite. We have not been given clear reasons why the companies relocate.

“We want them to stay put because the region has the potential for good investment. The de-industrialisation is not good for us here. It increases unemployment and anti-social behaviour,” said Moyo.

“People deliberately destroy industries as it is easy to do so, but it would not be easy for them to rebuild hence we are saying those contemplating closing down industries here should reconsider their plans because it will be costly for them,” Moyo said.
