Age is but a number for the Kweseka Makishi Dance Troupe leader and drummer Kasanga Makishi, who claims to be 91 years old and still going strong, is giving energetic performances.

The nonagenarian who stays in the high-density suburb of Chinotimba in Victoria Falls narrated his journey to success as a Nyau dancer and drummer who beats the drum with unique skill and stunning vigour.

“I was born in Angola in June 1920, but I cannot remember the exact date. We came to Zimbabwe using the Zambian route,” said the old man.

“We were never taught how to play the drums, but we just saw it fit to preserve our culture as youths involved in these practices since it is our Tshogwe culture from Angola.”

Makishi said people should not dump their cultural ways of worship, entertainment and fellowship saying such bevahiour would widen the gap between communities and their ancestors.

He led his group through stiff competition to clinch second position in the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Competition Matabeleland North provincial finals.

During the day of the competition, Makishi was fasting while his colleagues were feasting, this clearly shows how seriously the old man views culture.

“This is not just a competition but it’s also a platform to showcase our culture because these tourists who come to Zimbabwe search for proper and genuine acts, so we don’t have to perform, but demonstrate how we are brought up in our societies.”

The nonagenarian who was also half-dressed (as shown in the picture) beats the drum while lying down and he displays many other drumming skills which others of his age or younger would not even dream of performing.

For coming second, the 10-member group walked away with $300 and will represent Matabeleland North in the finals to be held in Harare in September.
