Skillful striker Kabange Mupopo grabbed a brace as Zambia thumped Botswana in a dead rubber Group A Cosafa Women’s Championships football encounter at Rufaro on Tuesday.

Mupopo was clearly the star of the show with well-taken goals either side of the half, to add to further goals by midfielder Noria Sosala and substitute Rebecca Lisaka.

Botswana got their consolation goal through a well-taken free kick by skipper Bonang Otlhagile deep into injury time.

Zambia coach Enala Phiri said: “It was a good victory but it was just a consolation victory for us. My girls managed to come back strongly after losing the first two matches.

“The tournament has been good for us and experience is the best teacher and in the next tournament we will aim higher.”

Her counterpart from Botswana, Gaoletlhoo Nkutlwisang, said the tournament had given her team enough exposure to measure themselves as they were still on a learning curve.

“We’ve lost all our games and it’s unfortunate but overall it’s been a learning curve for us and we will go back to the drawing board and look and learn from what we have been seeing from the other teams for future tournaments,” said Nkutlwisang.
