A 55-year-old Harare man, Anderson Manyera Makaza, has been arrested on allegations of raping a toddler with the assistance of his girlfriend (23) at his house in Avondale.

The girlfriend, identified in Makaza’s court papers as Talent Kashava, but in State papers as Talent Nyama, was also nabbed and charged with being an accomplice.

It is alleged on March 19, the victim’s mother left her daughter in her friend Nyama’s custody and went to South Africa and returned nearly a fortnight later.

During her mother’s absence, Nyama became close to the child and on June 5, when she was sent to buy paraffin in Mbare she took the girl with her and disappeared for two days.

It is alleged Nyama did not go to Mbare, but took the child to Makaza’s residence where he reportedly raped the girl while Nyama watched.

After allegedly raping the toddler, Makaza is said to have wiped off blood from her private parts and offered her chocolate and maputi (popcorn) while Nyama persuaded her to stop crying.

Makaza reportedly gave the child an undisclosed amount of money as “a token of appreciation”.

However, the matter came to light when the child complained she was in pain when her mother was bathing her and upon being quizzed she spilled the beans, leading to the arrest of the two .

They were both not asked to plead when they appeared separately before regional magistrate Daniel Shonhiwa on charges of rape and accomplice to the crime of rape respectively.

The magistrate remanded them in custody and advised them to apply for bail at the High Court.
