The Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Tennis Board is on a drive to revive the sport in high-density suburbs.

This was revealed by the board chairman Adam Joelson on Tuesday when the board donated tennis equipment to Luveve High School.

“We just want to spread the game as much as possible. The plan is to revive the sport in high-density suburbs and this is our first donation this year. We want to establish centres, like Luveve in the high-density suburbs and then come up with district and provincial squads as we spread the sport,” Joelson said.

He said the tennis board would soon be engaging the Bulawayo City Council with a view to face-lifting some of the tennis facilities in the city that are lying idle.

Of note were the facilities in Emakhandeni, Luveve, Tshabalala and the White City Stadium courts.

“We will be making more donations even to the city councils schools. We will actually be engaging the city council with a view to renovating some of the tennis recreational facilities that are lying idle in the city,” Joelson said.

The board on Tuesday donated 10 tennis racquets and thirty balls valued at more than $2 000.

Headmaster of the school, William Ncube, paid tribute to the tennis board for the donation.

“We are very grateful for the donation. It comes at an opportune time when a number of our students want to play the sport but we have not been able to purchase the equipment due to financial constraints. The gesture means Luveve is going to be churning out the Caras and the Mawisires,” Ncube said.

The institution’s sports director, Thabani Mpofu, said the school will soon be establishing a tennis club that would be run by the students.

“We are very thankful for the donation. What we are going to do is to revive the sport by forming a club that the students will run by themselves with the guidance of the department,” Mpofu said.

Thesly Mafunda, the tennis board’s development officer, has been tasked with job of reviving the sport in the western suburbs.
