Warriors’ top striker Knowledge Musona has become a hot cake on the market after it emerged on Thursday that Scottish football giants Glasgow Celtic want his signature.

The news come after a German club Hoffeinhem also indicated that they were interested in the Kaizer Chiefs goal poacher, who had an outstanding maiden season with the South African glamour club.

The Glasgow club, who will play Uefa Champions League football again this coming season, have already announced the signing of another African, Kenyan international Victor Wanyama, who was previously at Germinal Beerschot in Belgium.

Celtic’s bid for the former Aces Academy player comes amid another strong desire by Hoffeinhem who had already started making travel arrangements for the player to be in Germany as soon as possible.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has written to Chiefs owner Kaizer Motaung to announce his intention to possibly sign South Africa’s leading goal scorer.

Respected football magazine Kick Off reported that plans to go to Germany for trials with Hoffeinhem may be derailed by a firmer bid from the Scottish club as Musona’s profile in the transfer market has received a dramatic boost by his winning of the PSL’s top goal scorer award.

Chiefs officials told KickOff.com earlier yesterday that Musona was in the process of getting a visa to go to Germany.

But Lennon’s letter promises to give Chiefs a firm offer in the next days after further study of videos and scouting reports of the Zimbabwe international. Musona’s visa would be ready on Monday after which he will travel to Germany.

Musona told Kick Off after the awards: “I can’t say I’m leaving for now, because I still have to travel to Germany for trials and I haven’t heard anything about Glasgow Celtic, but it is my dream to play in the top leagues in Europe and my team, Chiefs, will let me go to fulfil my dreams . . .

“I was nervous when I came to Chiefs, but I adapted. If I sign for the German team I will be nervous, but I will adapt. I feel I’m ready to play overseas.”

In another development, Musona’s profile continues to soar after he was voted Players’ Player of the Season at the Kaizer Chiefs awards ceremony held at Theatre on the Track in Kyalami, Johannesburg, on Wednesday night.

Musona also bagged the goal of the season award worth R10 000.

Chiefs skipper Jimmy Tau walked away with the club’s Player of the Season award. “Big Five”, as Tau is affectionately known in Naturena, missed only a single league game all season and received R90 000 in prize money for his efforts and drove away in a Nissan Qashqai from the club’s sponsors.

Punch Masenamela, who finalised his three-year deal with Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday night, justified to some extent why the Brazilians approached Chiefs for his services by getting the Most Improved Player of the Season award. Musona scored 20 goals in all competitions during the 2010/11 season and felt his teammates picked the right man for the award.

“They saw my contribution during the season and now they are acknowledging it,” Musona told Kick Off.

“They are my teammates and they were not jealous of me, that’s why they picked me. I must say thanks very much to them for being honest.

“I also want to thank my coach (Vladimir Vermezovic) and my teammates for their support. I couldn’t have made it on my own,” said Musona, who was instrumental in Amakhosi’s Telkom Knockout triumph and was deservedly named the Player of the Tournament as well as being the top striker of the competition.

Musona’s 2010/11 honours at Chiefs: l Player of the Month for September, October, November and December (including a Southern Sun voucher and R5 000 cash from Vodacom for each month)

Goal of the Season (R10 000 prize from Nike)
