Maphosa likely to play against Masvingo

Former TP Mazembe and Monomotapa defender Mthulisi Maphosa is set to make his maiden appearance for FC Platinum in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) against Masvingo United at Mucheke Stadium on Sunday.

But his availability depends on securing a licence as the transfer window period opens tomorrow.

FC Platinum secretary-general Phil Muwengwa confirmed to NewsDay Sport Maphosa, a former Under-23, Zimbabwe Saints and Monomotapa defender, could make his debut for the Premiership moneybags.

“We have submitted all the papers and we are waiting for his licence which we hope to get on Friday or on Saturday morning . He has been training with the team since April,” said Muwengwa.

Turning to the game against Masvingo United, Muwengwa said they were geared up for the game and aimed to continue with their fine run under new coach Rahman Gumbo, who has made himself unavailable for pre- and post-match interviews with NewsDay.

“As log leaders people expect us to be under pressure, but we are not. We have done our preparations very well. We need the three points and we have to stay on top of the log,” he said.
Platinum should be wary of Masvingo United as they are no pushovers with an unbeaten record at home.

“Masvingo United have not lost at home. We do not under-rate them at all. It will be a mammoth task for us to beat them at Mucheke,” he said.

Under the mentorship of former Highlanders coach Gumbo, the Zvishavane-based team leapt to the top of the PSL log after they dismissed Kiglon 2-0 at Mandava Stadium in their last premiership encounter.

Gumbo has not dropped a point since he assumed the post as he beat Highlanders 2-0 on his first assignment at home before edging Hwange 1-0 at the Colliery.

Masomere said they hoped to put an end to drawing games as that was costing them valuable points.

“FC Platinum is a very good and dangerous team. We hope to capitalise on any mistake that they will make. On the departure of these players, we have been missing most of our players because of problems in the team in most of our games. We have however managed to play and win without a full squad,” he said.
