The government will release $582 000 to refurbish 16 government schools in Bulawayo, the acting provincial education director Emmanuel Mugomba has said.

Speaking during a handover of roofing material for a classroom block at Lukhanyiso Primary School by Bulawayo Metropolitan governor Cain Mathema last Thursday, Mugomba said the rehabilitation programme was already laid out and funds were expected to be released in the second half of this year. Under the first phase of the programme 10 schools were rehabilitated at a cost of $280 703, 77.

“This programme began in 2010 and overlapped to 2011,” Mugomba said.

“These rehabilitation programmes are self-help programmes meant for government schools only and help will only be given when parents have identified school needs and they (parents) will need to mobilise resources and apply to the government to implement the projects.”

Mugomba said the rehabilitation programmes were being jointly carried out under the Ministry of Education and the Public Sector Investment Programmes.
