The government is expected to release at least $582 000 to refurbish 16 government schools in Bulawayo, acting provincial education director Emmanuel Sheunesu Mugomba has said.

Speaking at a presentation of a donation of a five-classroom block roofing material to Lukhanyiso Primary School by the governor of Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Cain Mathema, last Thursday, Mugomba said the rehabilitation programme second phase was already laid out and, “16 schools have been bid for at a cost of $581 871 and funds are expected to be released in the second half of this year”.

Under the first phase of the programme, 10 schools were rehabilitated at a cost of $280 703.

Mugomba said government efforts on infrastructure were underway as it engaged in development and maintenance programmes in schools.

“These rehabilitation programmes are self-help programmes meant for government schools only and help will only be given when parents have identified school needs and they (parents) will need to mobilise resources and apply to the government to implement the projects,” he said.

Mugomba also said the government had promised to give $1 341 393 to five schools, Amhlophe High, Emganwini Secondary, Nkulumane 2 Secondary, Emganwini 2 Primary and Cowdray Park Secondary, to refurbish the schools’ infrastructure and create a conducive learning environment.

Mugomba said the rehabilitation programmes were under the Ministry of Education, Sports, Arts and Culture and were part of Public Sector Investment Programme.
