DVD informs youths on elections

A local non-governmental organisation, Youth Alliance for Democracy (YAD) on Friday launched a civic education compact disc (CD) and a digital versatile disc (DVD) encouraging youths to register to vote in the next general elections.

YAD coordinator Thulani Mswelanto said the CD and DVD are titled Donhodzo (Pacifier).

“The CD has four tracks that seek not only to get youths registered to vote, but also to mitigate against electoral violence,” he said.

“This is also part of the broader alternative media advocacy channels being employed by the organisation to provide unbiased information on electoral processes.”

Mswelanto said the DVD is a compilation of young people’s views calling for electoral reforms collected during outreach meetings and will be used to lobby the government to embark on a reform process that will lead to electoral democracy.

“We want to make sure that youths are well-informed on these issues and we are leaving nothing to chance,” said Mswelanto.

“With an increase in the number of new, informed young voters, coupled with comprehensive electoral reforms, we anticipate minimal electoral fraud.”

He said they planned to distribute 50 000 copies of the educative discs.

YAD also launched the youth voter’s guide which has information on the country’s electoral system, laws and procedures, dispelling electoral myths that have been peddled over the years to marginalised communities.
