A senior police officer, Assistant Inspector Obert Magebede (38), was last week arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault after he allegedly sodomised his brother’s 10-year-old son. Magebede was staying with the boy at Chikurubi Support Unit camp in Harare when the alleged abuse took place.

The matter is said to have come to light two weeks ago when the boy allegedly sought refuge at Highlands Police Station after failing to contain the pressure of sexual demands and alleged abuse by the top officer. The boy was seen wandering in the police camp and was reportedly reluctant to go home.

He narrated his ordeal to senior officers at the camp, prompting them to investigate the matter.

Magebede was subsequently arrested over the matter, but was not asked to plead when he appeared before regional magistrate William Bhila last Friday.

He was remanded in custody to July and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

The boy, who is in Grade 5, allegedly told the police that the abuse by his uncle started sometime in December last year although he could not remember the exact date.

It is alleged in the first encounter, Magebede intruded into the room where the boy was sleeping with his younger cousin.

He took the young girl into the dining room and laid her on a sofa before returning for the boy.

It is the State’s case that he awakened the boy, who was naked at the time, and sat him on his lap after which he sodomised him once.

After the act, Magebede is alleged to have given the boy some toilet paper and ordered him to wipe off the semen before threatening him with unspecified action if he dared to make a report.

Magebede is alleged to have pounced on the boy again in February and April and on the last occasion, the boy allegedly vomited and suffered stomach pains prompting Magebede to rush him to hospital.
