Seven-time Olympic swimming medalist Kirsty Coventry added another silver medal in the 200m individual medley event to take her medal tally to three silver medals on the final day of the Mare Nostrum Grand Prix series in Monaco on Sunday.

According to reports from Monaco, Coventry jumped out to a big lead in the backstroke and extended it in the breaststroke before Great Britain’s Hannah Miley outpaced her on the back half by a full second to win the gold medal in 2:12,69secs.

Coventry settled for the silver in 2:12,91secs, while Bianca Meyer of South Africa settled for the bronze medal in 2 minutes and 20,05secs.

The 27-year-old swimming sensation will take plenty of confidence into the Shanghai meet. After the Mare Nostrum series she is scheduled to take part in the backstroke event at the July FINA World Championships in Shanghai.

One the first day of the swimming meet on Saturday, Coventry picked up two silvers in the 400m individual medley and the 200m backstroke, an event she will be the defending champion at the World Championships.

Coventry is the reigning world champion in the 200m backstroke event after setting a new world record time of 2:04,81secs on her way to winning the world title at the last world championships in Rome in August 2009.

She also came second in the 400m individual medley at the same tournament. Coventry will be Zimbabwe’s brightest medal prospect for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The Mare Nostrum international swimming meet provided elite swimmers with a chance to compete against each other before the World Championships.

Coventry now heads to Rome for the 48th edition of the International Open Swimming Trophy also known as the Sette Colli next weekend.
