The police crackdown on MDC-T supporters widened on Sunday with the arrest of a third MDC-T councillor over the murder of a senior Harare policeman, Inspector Petros Mutedza, a fortnight ago.

Ward 17 councillor Warship Dumba was arrested on Sunday morning.

He joins his colleagues Tungamirai Madzokere and Sydney Chirombe who are already in custody together with 21 others who were arrested in separate incidents since the cop’s murder on May 30 in Glen View 3.

This brings the total number of imprisoned MDC-T activists to 24.

After Mutedza’s death, police arrested several MDC-T supporters and threatened a heavy clamp -down on party activists and civic society groups whom they accused of perpetrating violence.

But, police spokesperson James Sabau said he was unaware of Dumba’s arrest.

MDC-T spokesperson for Harare Obert Gutu confirmed Dumba’s arrest.

“I can confirm he was arrested and taken to Harare Central Police Station before he was transferred to Mbare. His arrest is linked to the Glen View violence but he was nowhere near the incident,” said Gutu.

“Police are just finding a convenient excuse to silence Dumba and the MDC,” he said.

“The arrest of Dumba is just another example of State-sponsored harassment that is being unleashed on MDC activists in Harare, particularly since the unfortunate death of a policeman a few weeks ago. The ZRP has since embarked on a mission to target, harass and arrest MDC activists in a nefarious attempt to cow them into submission,” Gutu said.
