The Simba Makoni-led Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn (MKD) party is set to hold its first elective national convention next month with 12 senior posts up for grabs.

Party spokesperson Silver Bhebe told NewsDay the convention was likely to be held at the beginning of July.

“We are targeting the 1st of July 2011, the second anniversary of the launch of our party, for our inaugural national convention,” said Bhebe.

Former Finance minister Makoni, who came a distant third in the last presidential election in 2008, is the party’s interim leader.MKD was launched on July 1 2009 at Stoddart Hall in Harare.

Bhebe said the convention would be held in Harare at a venue yet to be announced.

“Details of the venue are going to be communicated after the meeting of the national management committee which is scheduled for June 18 2011,” he said.

The posts to be contested include that of president, vice-president, national chairperson, organising secretary, deputy organising secretary, secretary for communication and deputy, secretary for economic affairs and deputy, secretary for legal affairs and deputy, secretary for social affairs and deputy, secretary for youth affairs and deputy secretary for women affairs and deputy, secretary for administration and deputy and secretary for international relations and co-operation and deputy.

It was not clear whether canvassing for posts had begun or if Makoni would be challenged for the presidency.
