The National Gallery of Zimbabwe will in August host Pritt Holiday Art Camp, a five-day camp for pupils which serves to provide the youths with a space to develop their visual creative abilities.

The art camp was developed by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in partnership with Glue and Chemical Products and it provides the young artists opportunities to explore different mediums of art including painting, drawing and craft.

“In April we held a five-day Pritt Holiday Art Camp for primary and secondary level pupils and again the National Gallery of Zimbabwe would like to acknowledge and thank Glue and Chemical Products of renewing its sponsorship for the programme,” said gallery communications officer, Rutendo Mutadzapasi.

She said the art camp which was held at the gallery in April was a resounding success with schools such as Mabelreign Girls High School and Hellenic School participating, as it was fully subscribed with 42 pupils.

“The department of education is very grateful to the executive director of Glue and Chemical Products, Gerald Chivasa for generously sponsoring the certificates, food, as well as glue used during the camp,” she said.

Mutadzapasi said children between three and 13 years were involved in construction, painting and beadwork, as a result, producing impressive final products and the seniors were mainly involved in drawing and painting from observation as well as in making tie-and-dye materials.

The programme is meant to expose students to ways of approaching the art examination papers they will sit for at the end of the year.

On the last day of the camp students participate in putting up a splendid and colourful show of the work accomplished during the week and three outstanding students in each category are awarded prizes while every participant walks away with a certificate of attendance in recognition of their talent.

“The holiday camp serves as a forum to encourage creativity in schools, to reward excellence and give schools the opportunity to view work from other schools and see the different ways in which the subject is approached,” she said.

Mutadzapasi said the upcoming art camp in August would be interesting with new creative and fascinating projects and schools were welcome to contact the gallery’s education department for further information.
