Outgoing Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) chairman and Harare mayor, Muchadeyi Masunda, has called on public officials not to cling on to power, but to give others a chance if they want to retain society’s respect.
Addressing delegates at a VMCZ annual general meeting in Harare on Friday, Masunda decried leaders who clung to their positions even if they remained popular.
Masunda will be replaced by human rights lawyer Aleck Muchadehama as VMCZ chairperson.
“It is good to learn to step down and hand over power. I know of people like Lovemore Matombo (ZCTU president) who is studiously clinging on to power, as well as the other two who you all know,” Masunda said, drawing laughter from the floor.
Masunda added, “You need to go when you are done with your business. This is a culture we need to inculcate.”
Muchadehama, who landed the post uncontested, said: “At first it seemed a big task for me, but I take comfort in the fact that I will be learning and that I will be representing members of the public, who are ordinary people and the innocent readers. But I also need your support.”
Muchadehama will be deputised by veteran journalist and former Standard editor Bornwell Chakaodza.
Other committee members include Tapfuma Machakaire, Edna Machirori, Cris Chinaka, Tawanda Majoni, Sebastian Bakare, Oscar Wermter and Charity Manyuruke.
