The NewsDay Bash on Saturday lived up to its billing and witnessed top-drawer performances from the line-up of artistes that performed in style before a sizeable crowd at the Harare Gardens.
Within just a year, NewsDay has proved to be a serious threat to established publications and the anniversary celebrations were stylish with Alpha Media Holdings, the publishers of the paper, telling the world a great success story.
Legendary musician Oliver Mtukudzi gave a virtuoso performance for a man who turns 59 in September, impressing the audience with his well-choreographed dances, belting out yesteryear hits like Tozeza Baba and Madiro.
His performance was justification of his credibility and the energy he still possesses when it comes to stage management.
“Critics will always be there to try to bring this man down but musically, he deserves to be titled the elder,” said one fan who seemed to have been closely following Tuku’s performance.
Tuku seems to be keeping it in the family and from all those who have been following the local musician’s shows, Donald Kanyuchi and Munya Mataruse have always been part of Tuku’s entourage wherever he performs.
These two are young musicians who learnt their trade at Tuku’s Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton.
In an interview with NewsDay just after his performance, Mataruse said he was happy being part of the NewsDay celebrations and seeing the ever-growing responses he had been receiving from the audiences.
