Daggers have been drawn against the Alexio Musundire-led Chitungwiza MDC-T provincial executive amid calls for the executive to resign.

This follows the signing of a petition by eight out of the party’s 12 district chairpersons seeking the intervention of the national executive to oust Musundire and his entire executive.

Yesterday, Musundire referred all questions to national party spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora.

Mwonzora initially promised to respond to the matter after about an hour, but was later unreachable on his mobile phone.

Sources, however, said some members of the national executive wanted James Makore to replace Musundire while names of candidates to replace the whole executive have been touted.

Contacted for comment, Makore said he had partially heard about the skirmishes but said he did not have full details as he had just arrived from South Africa.

The district chairmen said they wanted Musundire and his executive to go for allegedly flouting party procedures. He had allegedly contested at the Bulawayo congress hence he had to relinquish his provincial post.

However, party organising secretary Nelson Chamisa yesterday said the matter was yet to be brought to him.

“That matter has not been brought to our attention. In the event that it is brought and assuming there are concerns, it has to be done through proper structures of the party and an answer will also be given,” he said. The provincial executive said the move was tantamount to a “coup” against a democratically-elected executive and was an indicator that some members of the national executive who they did not nominate at the Bulawayo congress were after their heads.

Read part of the petition: “We are concerned with the lack of respect by the provincial executive which failed to compliment the position of the district chairmen to remove the (losing) provincial chairman.

“We now therefore want the whole executive to go. But before new elections, we demand fresh elections in the following districts to be done by the national executive.

“Chitungwiza South, Norton, Goromonzi South, Goromonzi North and Zengeza East because they were done badly with lots of favouritism. In the meantime, the district chairman should run the province.”
