Sulumani Chimbetu will celebrate his birthday in style as it coincides with the “Mid-Year Gig” that takes place at the City Sports Centre on Friday where the talented musician will share the stage with Oliver Mtukudzi, Willom Tight and Dino Mudondo

Josh Hozheri of Jazz 105, organisers of the gig, said all was in place for the gig, which would be a sister act to the annual “Shut-Down Gig” that takes place in December every year.

He said it was an exciting coincidence that Chimbetu would take the opportunity to celebrate his birthday with his fans at such a prestigious event.

“There will be a segment within the show when all participating musicians will come on stage and sing a birthday song for him. All the musicians will honour Sulumani in various ways and we have a lot of surprises for him,” said Hozheri.

Chimbetu turns 29 on Friday and has promised a party instead of a show.

“A party is more engaging than a show and I say the Friday (Friday’s) event is a party. I am inviting everyone to come and celebrate with me. There will be numerous surprises for everyone,” said Chimbetu.

Besides the birthday event, the show will be a continuation of the growing Chumbetu-Mtukudzi collaboration that has seen the musicians staging shows at various venues over the past month.

Chimbetu is on record saying he had received a lot of support and inspiration from Mtukudzi.

“Tuku has always been like a father to me. I respect him because he was part of my father’s generation of musicians and I always learn a lot from him. He is a mentor and advisor par excellence. What I would have wanted to know from my father musically, I can get from Tuku,” said Chimbetu.

The show would be an opportunity for Mudondo and Tight, who worked together for a long time before parting ways, to show their fans that they can still forge the unity that saw them making waves with songs like Bhazi and Chirangano. Both musicians promised to perform a number of duets during the show.
