Zimre chief operating officer Solomon Tembo has been appointed president of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO) after Zimbabwe assumed the group’s presidency by virtue of hosting AIO’s 38th Annual Conference and General Assembly.

Tembo takes over from Bai-Ndongo Faal from Gambia.

AIO presidency is rotated every year with host countries emerging as president of the body.

Speaking to NewsDay, Tembo said the new post would significantly improve the insurance industry in Zimbabwe.

“With Zimbabwe assuming presidency it means we cannot drive the African agenda at our own primary observation,” he said.

Finance minister Tendai Biti said as the government they looked forward to the support of the entire AIO membership to steer the organisation “to safe waters during our tenure as president”.

Zimre CEO Albert Nduna said the presidency for Zimbabwe could not have come at a better time as the sector was recovering locally.

“As a country we want to embark on positive developments and initiatives that will change the insurance sector for the better in Zimbabwe and Africa,” he said.

Outgoing president Bai-Ndongo Faal said the presidency of AIO will be in safe hands in the next year.

“With the manner Zimbabwe hosted this conference it can only tell you that insurance players in this country know what they are doing and will take this industry to another level locally and in Africa,” he said.
