Harare South MP Hubert Nyanhongo has been accused of abandoning the constituency in favour of his home area of Nyanga North.

Zanu PF insiders last week said Nyanhongo’s decision to desert his constituency was largely influenced by the bruising battle he had with Zanu PF Harare chairperson Amos Midzi over control of the province.

The Zanu PF leadership in the constituency is now accusing Nyanhongo of directing his energies to Nyanga North in Manicaland.

Nyanhongo, who is also Energy and Power Development deputy minister, is reportedly eyeing the Nyanga North seat currently held by MDC-T’s Douglas Mwonzora.

A Zanu PF councillor in Harare South, Evelyn Njiri, said people were crying foul over the absence of the MP.

Njiri said Nyanhongo last held meetings in the constituency a long time ago and the people “are not happy with him”.

Harare South is the only constituency won by Zanu PF out of a total of 29 constituencies in the capital city.

Contacted for comment on Thursday, Nyanhongo was not co-operative saying he was coming from the airport and was not in a position to comment.

He said: “What has happened for you to call me today? I don’t know what has been happening (as) I was away for seven days and I am coming from the airport right now.”

Pressed further, Nyanhongo switched off his mobile phone.

Njiri, the only Zanu PF councillor in Harare South, said: “I just heard that he is now campaigning in Nyanga. That is what the people are saying and he has not been seen in meetings for some time now.”

Several projects in the area have since been abandoned while co-operatives have been fighting over land in the constituency, issues which people believe the MP should be attending to.

Early this year, Nyanhongo was fingered in violence in Nyanga North after the MDC-T accused him of setting up bases in the constituency.

In a dossier compiled by Mwonzora and handed to the Joint Monitoring Committee, Nyanhongo, a former soldier, was accused of using “military tactics” to try and wrest the constituency.

Mwonzora’s dossier read in part: “Nyanhongo’s vehicles, including a Nissan Hardbody ABD3740, a Mazda BT50 and a tipper lorry, were used by Zanu PF youths pursuing my motor vehicles.”
