Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and other leaders from his party are on Monday expected to attend the Independence Day celebrations at the National Sports Stadium.

MDC-T spokesperson Nelson Chamisa on Sunday said although his party was unhappy about Zanu PF “divorcing itself from what the people fought for during the liberation struggle” and claiming monopoly over such events, the MDC-T leadership would attend the celebrations to mark the country’s 31 years of independence.

“The people’s party of excellence takes all truly national events and occasions seriously as platforms of convergence on national business,” he said.

“Independence runs the risk of losing its meaning in the absence of involvement in the democratic exercise by all Zimbabweans.

“The party leadership is expected to attend and national events like this should move from ownership of political parties to ownership of every Zimbabwean on basis of real meaning to their everyday life,” Chamisa said.

He added that independence should be synonymous with comfort and the principles of those who fought in the liberation struggle.

“People should celebrate, cherish and honour rather than regret and condemn it. If we are to take stock and draw up a catalogue of our independence and what people fought for, we are in deficit and in the negative,” Chamisa said.

He said a lot of what people fought for including the one man one vote principle, food and jobs and prosperity were yet to be realised.

The party has of late been boycotting national events arguing that Zanu PF was monopolising such occasions.

This year’s celebrations come at a time several MDC ministers have been arrested and arraigned before the courts while the police have stopped most MDC gatherings.
