The touring UK Independent Schools team, the Barbarians registered their first victory after thumping an Under-18 Districts’ Select team 38-17 at Lomagundi College in Chinhoyi on Monday.

The tourists went for the oranges leading 17-0 at halftime and went on to add a further 21 points, while the Districts gave the score line some respectability with 17 points in the second half.

The Districts’ Select side was made up of Under-18 players from schools in Mashonaland East and Mashonaland West.

This was an important victory for the visitors after they lost their first match against Harare Lions at Prince Edward School’s Jubilee Field on Saturday. Zimbabwe Under-18 head coach Brighton Murambiwa said:

“The visitors played much better than they did against the Harare Lions and overall they dominated the phase possession and were stronger in the scrum.

“Their backline also made some intelligent runs in different angles which made it difficult for our boys to defend and although we scored 17 points in the second half, the visitors were the better side on the day.”

The touring Barbarians now return to the capital for a clash with the Zimbabwe Under-19 team at St Johns College’s Honey Field on Wednesday.

The tourists will then conclude their tour with a match against the Goshawks Schools team at the same venue on Friday.
