Mash East pip Mat South to NASH title

Mashonaland East province are this year’s winners of the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) athletics championship after trouncing the other nine provinces at Trojan Mine stadium in Bindura on Wednesday and Thursday.

The provinces competed in the track and field events.

Mashonaland East dominated in both the field and track events to wrestle the title from last year’s winners, the Midlands Province.

The winner amassed a whopping 26 gold, 15 silver and 25 bronze medals to claim pole position. On position two was Matabeleland South Province who managed 18 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze medals. Manicaland came third with 14 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze medals while the defending champions could only manage 11 gold, 2 silver and 11 bronze medals.

Midlands, who used to gunner more points in their specialised cross-country struggled in this year’s edition the category was scratched off the competition and that hugely affected their final rankings on the medal standings.

The big disappointment of the tournament however was the Harare province who ranked ninth with a paltry 3 gold, 13 silver and 6 bronze medals.

The province was the pre-tournament favourites after winning the National Youth Games (NYG) late last year in which they dominated in all the track and field events. The NYG usually act as a dress rehearsal to the NASH games.

Mashonaland West was at position five, followed by Bulawayo, Mashonaland Central and Masvingo respectively.

Matabeleland North anchored the log standings with no gold medal, seven bronze and seven silver medals.
