Police in Bulawayo have arrested the kombi crew that fled after their vehicle was involved in an accident that killed three people on Monday morning.
National police traffic spokesperson, Inspector Tigere Chigome, said the kombi driver and his conductor were arrested in the city later in the day.
“They were arrested yesterday (Monday) but their names are currently being withheld. Investigations on the matter are still continuing,” said Chigome.
The accident, which occurred along the Pumula-city centre road near Hyde Park Cemetery, killed three people on the spot and left 15 others injured, five of them seriously.
Four of the injured passengers were yesterday still admitted at United Bulawayo Hospitals, and their condition was said to be stable.
“Out of the 15 people injured, eleven of them were treated and discharged as they had minor injuries. Three were brought dead and four are still admitted here as they were seriously injured. They are still recuperating,” said a senior nursing officer who declined to be named.
The accident occurred when the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and plunge into a storm drain.
According to police, the kombi driver was speeding. Meanwhile, police declined to release the names of the deceased as their next of kin were yet to be informed.
