-

Top long-distance runners Kelvin Pangiso, Raymomd Shava, Thandiwe Nyathi and Olivia Chitete will be out to defend their titles at the National Cross Country Championships set for Allan Lowry Golf Course in Redcliff Kwekwe on Sunday.

Harare Province’s Pangiso won last year’s 12km senior men race, with Shava claiming the 8km junior men’s contest. Chitete won the 6km senior women category with Nyathi scooping the 4km junior women competition.

Attention will be on Pangiso who clocked 40 minutes 06 seconds last year. Nyathi wants to affirm her growing status after a scintillating performance at the National Youth and Zone VI Games.

More than 240 runners are expected to participate at the country’s premier cross country race which will also be graced by veteran long-distance runners Wirimai Zhuwawo, Kudakwashe Shoko, Mako Mambo, Sharon Tavengwa and Samukeliso Moyo.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe secretary- general Davis Leboho on Thursday said the Redcliff meeting is an appetiser ahead of a hectic 2011 season.

“This is of course a very big event so we are expecting a very large turn out from the country’s who is who in athletes.

Since this is a season opener, we are expecting our athletes to attend in large numbers,” said Leboho.
