The Zimbabwe Softball Association (ZSA) has released an ambitious event calendar which they said will help resuscitate the sport in the country.
Stonard Mapfumo, the ZSA president, said the calendar would prepare players for the upcoming regional and international competitions.
“Softball is a sport that is beginning to grow but it has been hampered by the shortage of equipment.
Recently it has seen a big improvement in high schools and club participation,” Mapfumo added.
Mapfumo said that his association wants to open a new chapter for the sport, as they want to send players to compete at all regional and international tournaments.
In the past ZSA has struggled to send participants to these competitions due to financial problems.
Last year, the association failed to send a team to compete in the Martin Sass championship in South Africa and also failed to make it to the Zone VI championships in Lesotho because it had no money.
The sport reached its peak in 2009 when the national Under-16 girls’ team qualified for the World Cup in Czech Republic but failed to travel due to visa complications.
